My Stomach, My Life: An Experience to Share

Life has a way of teaching us lessons through the most unexpected experiences. For me, it was my stomach that became my greatest teacher—silently shaping my health, emotions and even my relationships.

For years, I ignored the subtle signals my body was sending me. Occasional bloating, discomfort after meals and that sluggish feeling after eating certain foods were dismissed as minor inconveniences. After all, isn’t a little indigestion normal? But as time passed, these “little” issues snowballed into persistent acid reflux, irregular bowel movements and an overall feeling of unease.

The Hidden Connection: Stomach and Overall Well-being

It wasn’t just about digestion anymore. My skin lost the glow and started breaking out. Hair fall and greying became normal. My energy levels plummeted. I found myself irritable, struggling with mood swings that seemed to have no cause. Even my teeth weren’t spared—I noticed tartar buildup and occasional sensitivity that my dentist linked to acid reflux. Result - I lost several teeth at an early age !

I started digging deeper and was shocked to discover the profound impact gut health has on everything—from dental hygiene to heart health. Studies suggest that poor digestion can contribute to chronic inflammation, which is a root cause of cardiovascular diseases. Who would have thought that something as simple as an unhappy stomach could be the silent culprit behind so many health struggles? Unknowingly I was a victim of GIGO syndrome - Garbage in Garbage out. I was using my stomach as a garbage bin !

The Wake-up Call

The turning point came when I visited a functional medicine practitioner. Instead of prescribing quick-fix medications based on symptoms, he asked me about my diet, stress levels, even my lifestyle including sleeping habits. That’s when I realized how disconnected I had become from my own body. I was consuming foods that didn’t suit me, eating at irregular times and carrying stress in my gut like an emotional sponge. The Transformation

I decided to take control. I started:
✔️ Listening to my gut: Identifying foods that made me feel heavy vs. those that energized me.
✔️ Prioritizing gut-friendly foods: Fermented foods, fiber-rich meals and natural probiotics.
✔️ Eating mindfully: Slowing down, chewing thoroughly and allowing my body to digest properly.
✔️ Managing stress: Yoga, deep breathing, and making time for joy.
Drinking luke warm water at all times, freehand Exercises coupled with Breathing Exercises is a sure shot way to keep one Healthy by combating stress, mindful eating and improving gut health.

The change was profound. My digestion improved, my energy returned and my mood stabilized. Even my skin looked healthier. Most importantly, I felt connected to myself again.

Lesson Learnt - Your Stomach, Your Life

If you’ve been battling unexplained health issues, take a step back and ask: “Is my gut trying to tell me something?” Our stomachs aren’t just organs that process food; they are the foundation of our well-being. The saying "Drink water like food and eat food like water" carries deep wisdom, advocating for mindfulness in both hydration and nutrition. It emphasizes the need to consume water with the same attentiveness as food and to eat food with the ease and fluidity of drinking water—both of which are often ignored in our modern, rushed lifestyle.

Let's understand the physical process of Eating and Drinking 

  • Eating involves consuming solid or semi-solid food that needs to be chewed and broken down before digestion.
  • Drinking involves consuming liquids, which do not require chewing and can be swallowed directly.

The Wisdom is Meaningful and highly Action oriented

  1. Drink water like food

    • This means water should be consumed with awareness, in a slow, rhythmic manner rather than gulping it down in haste.
    • Water to be taken in mouthful sips (like morsels of food) to ensure that it is mixed with mouth saliva before it is gulped down.
    • Drinking water should be a deliberate act, allowing the body to absorb and utilize it efficiently with time.
    • Need to be conscious of the fact that water plays a crucial role in digestion, circulation, detoxification and emotional stability (as per the Pancha Bhoota system, where water governs emotions).
  2. Eat food like water

    • Food should be eaten in a relaxed manner, chewed thoroughly mixed with saliva and consumed with ease, just as we sip water.
    • The digestive process starts in the mouth and eating in a hurried or stressed state leads to improper digestion, gut disorders and mental unrest.
    • This principle ensures better digestion, absorption of nutrients and overall health balance.

To remain Ignorant is no more a bliss. Effects of Non-Compliance of this process in Everyday Life

  • Physical Degeneration:

  • Water influences Emotional Fluidity and Calmness (Pancha Bhoota Philosophy)

    • Our body comprises 70% of water and Water. As in ancient Bharatiya Philosophy, water  represents Emotional fluidity and Calmness. Improper hydration impacts emotional stability, leading to irritability, impatience and lack of mental clarity.
    • Inadequate digestion due to hurried eating can increase stress, anxiety and intolerance.
    • The rise in impatience and reduced acceptance levels in society can be traced back to unhealthy eating and hydration habits.

Way Forward: Honoring the Saying in Everyday Life

  1. Mindful Hydration

    • Start the day with a glass of luke warm water, sipping it slowly.
    • Drink water sitting down rather than standing.
    • Avoid drinking water in a hurry; sip consciously ensuring that it is mixed with saliva before gulping it down..
    • Drink water 30 minutes before and after meals rather than during meals to aid digestion.
  2. Mindful Eating

    • Eat in a calm environment, away from distractions like screens or noise.
    • Chew food thoroughly to ensure a fluid like consistency before swallowing.
    • Focus on the flavors and textures of food, enjoying each bite.
    • Avoid overeating by listening to the body's hunger signals. Control portions.
  3. Balancing Water Element in the Body

By making these small yet powerful changes, we can restore emotional stability, improve patience and acceptance levels, and contribute to a healthier, more harmonious society.

Communication, on the other hand, involves both expressing and receiving information clearly and effectively. Non-sensory communication is one of the most significant today where one can talk to his or herself in meditation for Mental well being.
